Blepharoplasty: Let’s Break it Down
Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that is intended to rejuvenate the eyelids. It can be performed on upper or lower eyelids or typically on all four eyelids. Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure where excess skin is removed to restore a refreshed look. In some cases excess fat is also removed to improve a bulging appearance of the inner corner. Fat can also be transferred into the area below the eyebrow to restore youthful fullness.
It is important that skin is not overly removed so that the eyelids can close normally. We also make sure not to remove muscle, enabling closing of the eyelids and to avoid a hollow appearance. In some cases upper eyelid blepharoplasty can be covered by insurance if it is interfering with your peripheral vision.
Lower eyelid blepharoplasty is usually more about contouring the fat pads and tightening the lower eyelids. In many cases the fat is removed or transposed through an internal incision called a transconjunctival blepharoplasty. Some people also require tightening of the lower eyelid to keep an almond shape and prevent the lower eyelid from falling. This is called a canthoplasty, which is performed through an internal approach as well. When excess skin is present it can be conservatively surgically removed or we can use a laser to smooth the skin. In many cases, no skin is removed.
Blepharoplasty can be performed as a stand-alone procedure or in conjunction with other facial plastic procedures such as a brow lift or laser resurfacing.
Blepharoplasty is not a “cookie cutter” operation and each case is unique. Most patients have asymmetry and different amounts of skin or fat are tailored to their individual needs. The operation is usually performed in the office under iv sedation or local anesthesia. Healing is usually quick and painless with most patients getting back to their normal routine within 10 days. Although you will look better than before the operation within a week or two, it can take several months to see the final result.
Complications are rare but can occur so make sure your surgeon is skilled and experienced in this operation. The results are natural and last many years.
